How the receipt scanner works
Open the app, tap Scan, point at your grocery receipt. That's it. The pipeline:
- AI vision reads every text line on the receipt

- A multi-provider AI cascade with automatic failover assigns a shelf-life date — estimates keep flowing even when one provider is down, backed by a local USDA fallback

What stores work?
All of them. Walmart, Target, Kroger, Safeway, Aldi, Trader Joe's, Costco, Whole Foods, Publix, H-E-B, local markets, ethnic grocers — if it prints a receipt, ShelfLife reads it. No store-specific templates needed. The OCR works on any printed format.
What about handwritten receipts or crumpled paper?
Clear printed receipts work best. Crumpled or faded receipts may need a retake. Handwritten items (farmers market, deli counter) can be added manually in 2 taps — the scanner handles everything printed.
Privacy note: The receipt image is processed and discarded immediately. We don't store it. Only the extracted item text (de-identified) may enter the shared shelf-life cache so the next person gets a faster lookup.
